With a long history of building and designing boats, one of the things that designer Dick Lazzara - Rich's father - prides himself on is making a yacht's complexities simple.

"People first notice the design, but later on they get around to learning about the engineering," he says. "We have a tough time explaining all this stuff. It would take you half a book going through the engineering elements on this boat."

With flowing curves, automobile-style windshields and perfectly faired aft SeaDoo pods - two of Impulse's 64 piece hull mold - it's safe to say the 106 is one of the world's more contemporary yachts. "Everyone assumes the boat will float and when you push the throttles it'll go," the owner says. "The question is: How well does it go, how well does it ride and how comfortable is it when you are in the boat? We like the things we live in and touch, and we definitely like this boat."

For the interior, in-house designer Chris DeLashmutt drew another stunner that - like the exterior - reflects the newly designed Lazzara 80'. Gloss cherry, exotic granites and marbles, tasteful lighting and glass cabinets are on hand. "Chris has just done a stunning job," says the owner of Impulse. "We told them just a few things we wanted, like a game table and a bar in the saloon, then 100 percent of the design was done by Lazzara."

The four staterooms below could easily be five, but the owner opted for a study off the full-beam owner's suite, which has glass cabinets, shoji screens and a fantastic marble his-and-hers ensuite bathroom.

Although Dick Lazzara has 30 years of experience in yacht design, he always respects what his customers bring to his products. Hull #2 owner Jeff Gordon - a NASCAR driver who goes 200 mph for a living - will doubtless push the envelope performance-wise, possibly increasing the already quick 27-knot top speed. Hull #3 owner is someone who has built four large custom boats.

"The third owner was impressed - and this is interesting - from a custom standpoint," Lazzara says. "He couldn't believe the quality of workmanship, and the finish you could get in a semi-production environment without going out and building a true custom yacht. So those are three different owners with three different reasons for buying this boat."

From all of the above, we can conclude that all 60 of the Lazzara yacht owners out there on the high seas have one thing in common: they like their boats.
